Review: BREAKING NORMS: A Story of Love, Agony and Tolerance

BREAKING NORMS: A Story of Love, Agony and Tolerance
BREAKING NORMS: A Story of Love, Agony and Tolerance by Mita Balani
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Growing up in Mumbai, Sonia has always been a obedient daughter, dedicated friend, and loyal sister. She has always put others’ feelings before her own no matter what. Things are changing for Sonia now that she has met Esha, a beautiful and vibrant girl. Sonia feels complete when she is with Esha, but will their families be able to accept their relationship? Spanning from the early 2000s to present day, readers are taken on the journey of Sonia and Esha’s relationship from the sweet to the devastating.

This is a sweet book about discovering who you are. Sonia is a very likable character who tries her best to do what is expected of her, but at times feels she must follow her heart. Ms. Balani does a wonderful job in showing the girls’ relationship blossom, and in making their romance feel real. There are no overly sexual scenes in the book, and I think this would make it a good choice for teenagers to adults to read. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars, a wonderful debut novel!
